BPC190 / you are the worst thing in the world.

soon after the release of immolate yourself, scott cooper, one half of telefon tel aviv passed away.

"aside from charlie's singular genius and musical gifts, I can tell you that he was a total sweetheart of a guy, and a loving friend and confidant to people everywhere. his musicianship was surpassed only by his greater gift to the world - his warmth, his generosity, his unquenchable humor, and his undying loyalty to those whom he loved. in the spirit of honorable mention, however, I should mention that he had a shoe collection that was marvelous, knowledge of hip-hop that was profound, and knowledge of wine that was subtle."

read the rest of the blog entries on the telefon tel aviv myspace.

sadly, telefon tel aviv is more than likely to not make any more music, however; joshua eustis mentioned the potential of a solo project and that he will do something in the future for all the mourning fans.

i never got around to posting about immolate yourself because it's really complex and emotional and admitiably, i feel like i have no place critiquing their music. it's freeform, and expressive. who am i to say yay or nay? if you really care to know, i think it's ahead of it's time.  it will stand the test of time and only become more familiar as you get older.
the difference to me with club oriented music is that it is much more formulaic and only really good tunes will stand the test of time. i only post music i like so i'll probably never have to bother crying about the shitstorms of bad electronic music that exsist.

idaft.

for those of us who work on a computer all day and surf the internet constantly and aimlessly, amateur web and graphics designer Matias Najle from Buenos Aires has developed a brilliant cure for the afternoon work boredom syndrome: idaft. a wonderfully interactive flash console where users can construct their own electronic rhythms out of a collection of vocal samples from Daft Punk's Harder Better Faster Stronger. the 4x4 sample pad is triggered by your computer keyboard, permitting a variety of possible compositions. i killed at least 10 minutes on this thing yesterday. test it out above, or try the real thing at the actual website via the link below.

audiophile.

while looking online for human hearing range tests i found a couple of sites that use audio clips at differrent frequencies to i guess 'benchmark' your hearing capabilities. the human ear can detect aproximately 20hz to 22khz. i was able to hear up to 18.8khz so this means my ears are still in great shape after years of abuse ;) put your ears to the test!

here are a few no-brainer's that will let you hold onto your precious hearing for longer. hei.org is a good resource for further reading if you're curious or concerened.

  1. don't listen to your ipod/mp3 player with earbuds at high volume. ( it's not easy to break yourself into the habbit of listening to music at lower levels if you're customed to it being LOUD.
  2.  actually, just don't even use earbuds. investing in some decent headphones will be worth wile in the long run.
  3. use foam ear plugs whenever you are at a club, concert, or any continuously loud environment.

"oh no, i forgot my earbuds! what now?" - i got a great tip from a book i recently read that is lifesaver if you find yourself in this situation.

"ask a patron for a cigarette. rip off the filter. remove the paper surrounding the filter. tear the filter in half, length-ways. take each half then fold it in half and put into your ears. this will drop the level aprox. 20dB which should attenuate it just below the threshold that activates the little muscle in your middle ear to help prevent a threshold shift." - michael paul starvou "mixing with your mind"

BPC200 / moderat.

moderat is a musical collaboration of bpitch control artists apparat and modeselektor. both are somewhat akin to the sort of avant garde or, "forward thinking" edm/techno. i'm not going to say progressive, because that's obviously a style of it's own but i think BPC have always focused on distributing dynamic electronic music.

individually, modeselektor and apparrat both produce a variety of styles, the distinction being that i feel like modeselektor has more presence in a club atmosphere.
this self-titled full length is not club orriented at all. actually, the entire album glues very well together and has alot of emotion. these tracks don't really do this album it's justice so buy it when it comes out april 17th.
